‘Sector coupling’ – ie, the electrification of more areas of the economy – would enable countries in Europe to make substantial progress toward becoming the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Recently published report, authored by BloombergNEF in partnership with Eaton and Statkraft, explores how the transport, buildings and industrial sectors in Europe could be electrified by plugging them directly into the power grid or switching to green hydrogen produced from renewables (indirect electrification).

Its particular focus is the impact of sector coupling on the electricity system and market design, and highlights how policy makers and regulators could address some of the biggest challenges.
